Two-Stage Snow Blowers

Fear no storm.  That’s right, if you have a two-stage snowblower in your garage there’s no snowfall it can’t handle. No matter what the National Weather Service says, a two-stage snowblower will chew up and spit out the snow.

What is a two-stage snowblower?  A two-stage snowblower is a large, powerful snowblower that uses two actions to remove snow.  It has an impeller that spins slowly and feeds the snow back to a fan that is spinning quickly.  This fan then throws the snow up and out of the snowblower’s chute.

  • A two-stage snowblower can remove snow from any surface; gravel, blacktop or concrete, because it has adjustable “shoes” on the side of the auger housing.  These shoes can be adjusted according to the surface type, so the snowblower won’t pick up loose gravel or stones and throw them out of the chute.
  • Two stage snowblowers are available with gasoline powered engines, or battery powered electric motors.  Let’s review the features of both.

Gasoline Powered Two-Stage Snowblowers

  • Toro gasoline powered two-stage snowblowers are ideal for large driveways that hold up to 20 parked cars, and can easily clear snow up to the depth of the auger housing which is about twenty inches. The width of the auger housing, ranges from 24 to 32 inches.
  • Engine range from 8- to-14 horsepower.  Large, 11-to-14-inch augers and 11-to-14-inch impellers chew up any type of snow.  Augers no longer have shear pins. Years ago, these snowblowers had shear pins that would snap if the auger got stuck or encountered an obstacle.  The snapping shear pin would avert damage to the auger.  Currently, two stage snowblower augers and gear boxes are commercial grade and do not require shear pins.
  • All Toro two-stage snowblowers have an electric start.  A small electric motor (that you simply plug in to a wall outlet with an outdoor extension cord) is mounted on the gasoline engine.  You simply plug in your two stage snowblower, choke it, prime it, push a button and it starts.  Take the snowblower off choke, unplug it and it runs off of the gasoline in the engine.  You are now ready to tackle the driveway.
  • Two-stage snowblowers are also self-propelled with at least three forward speeds and one to two reverse speeds. This makes it easier for the snowblower to power through deep snow, and also clearing snow from a moderately sloped driveway.
  • Some Toro two stage snowblowers have triggerless steering.  Simply turn the snowblower and the wheel intelligently disengages to assist you through effortless turns.  Other Toro two-stage snowblowers have power steering to assist you in turning the machine.  All Toro two-stage snowblowers have quick stick chute control, which allows you to control the direction and angle the snow is thrown from the  snowblower.
  • Toro’s anti clogging auger system is second to none.  Toro has allowed an area for excess snow to be funneled back to the impeller at the back of the auger housing, which basically eliminates clogging as snow travels up the chute.
  • Cold hands?  Toro’s two stage snowblowers with heavy-duty handle construction, have handwarmers built into the handle.  Clearing snow in the early morning or late at night?  No worries here either.
  • Most Toro Power Max two-stage snowblowers have an LED headlight to assist you in seeing where you’re going, and allows you to be seen by drivers when it’s dark.
  • No more tire chains on a two stage snowblower.  Today’s two-stage snowblowers have large wheels with deep lug treads to help grip the surface. Some snowblowers even have tracks instead of wheels.

Toro Battery Powered Two-Stage Snowblowers

Toro battery powered two-stage snowblowers range in clearing width from 24- to 26- inches, and will clear between 18- to 24- inches of deep snow.  The features on a battery powered two-stage snowblower are very similar to those of a gasoline powered two-stage snowblower.  Same auger, impeller, auger gear box, chute control, tires, lights, and handles.  If you are using a battery powered two stage snowblower you must have extra batteries charged and ready.

  • The estimated run time on Toro battery powered two-stage snowblowers is rated based on the time it takes to clear an area of twelve to fifteen cars.
  • Most Toro battery powered snowblowers hold two to three batteries, so the more on-board batteries in the snowblower, the longer the run time.
  • The consistency of the snow will affect the battery run time as well.  The heavier the snowfall, the more power used by the batteries.  Toro 60-Volt batteries are interchangeable within the entire 60-Volt battery line-up, so if you have any other Toro 60-Volt products, those batteries can be used in the battery powered snowblower.  Charging time, depending on battery size, ranges from 150 to 180 minutes.

Maintenance

Maintenance on a gasoline powered two-stage snowblower is pretty simple.  Get in the habit of checking the oil before using your snowblower, and it is best to use Ethanol free gasoline.  Be sure to run the two stager engine out of gas at the end of the season, and use fresh Ethanol free gasoline at the beginning of the season.  There is a metal scraper bar on the bottom of the auger housing and after years plowing real heavy snow, or a few years of minimal use, you should check and possibly replace it.
