Benefits of Trimmers and Brushcutters

  • Handheld trimmers and brushcutters are used for trimming grass that your lawn mower, tractor or zero-turn mower cannot get to.
  • Trimmers and brushcutters can get into hard-to-reach places.  Under and around trees, into ditches, under fence lines, wet areas where your mower can’t go, edges of a body of water, next to any structure, etc.  When using a trimmer or brushcutter up against any solid object, like a tree, side of a building, landscape timbers or edging, always be sure you to use a trimmer line.  Trimmer line is flexible and will bend when up against an object.  Poly cutting fingers or any rigid cutting head will not bend and it will damage the tree bark or object.
  • Trimmers and brushcutters are typically handheld, but some also have wheels.
  • Residential trimmers usually have a “loop” handle, so you hold the trimmer with a grip on the trimmer shaft with one hand, and the other hand on the “loop” handle.
  • Handheld commercial trimmers and brushcutters usually have a “bicycle handle”.  You tuck the top of the trimmer under one arm, then each hand holds the “bicycle handle”.  A “bicycle handle” also provides safety.  If the trimmer kicks back, the handle will hit your body before the cutting head would injure you.  If you are a commercial user or a homeowner with a lot of property, a handheld commercial brushcutter may be best for you.  The best commercial brushcutters spin the head with an internal solid steel drive shaft rather than a cable.  These brushcutters can handle a variety of cutting heads and will last longer.  They are also more expensive, but will provide years of reliable service as long as they are taken care of with proper fuel mixing and maintenance.  Most heavy-duty Stihl brushcutters can take the following heads:  (Please note:  Special guards and parts may be required for installation on your trimmer if it does not have a bicycle handle and heavy head guard)
    • Grass blade
    • Fixed Line Cutting Head
    • Polycut Mowing Head
    • Brush Knife
    • Circular Saw Blade
    • Chisel Tooth Circular Saw Blade
  • The following safety apparel should always be worn when using a trimmer or brushcutter:
    • Eye protection
    • Face Shield
    • Close-toed shoes
    • Protective leg chaps and/or long pants
  • Wheeled trimmers have a line head with very heavy line that is twisted or braided.  These trimmers have two large wheels in the back, and a ball that the trimmer head that rides on the ground.  This trimmer is light and can easily be used to trim down into a ditch, or easily along a fence line.
  • Heavy duty walk-behind brushcutters are large, self-propelled units that have flail blades.  This type of brushcutter is used in heavily wooded areas and is capable of cutting through overgrown vegetation, weeds, heavy brush, vines and saplings with ease.  Flail blades are attached to the brushcutter on only one end; if they hit something, they bounce off the obstacle without damaging the blade or shaft on the brushcutter deck.  The deck on this brushcutter usually has a large guard on the front to help push debris over, and also a higher opening to accommodate larger brushcutter debris.  These commercial walk-behind, self-propelled brushcutters can be used to easily cut a path through the woods and are commonly used by customers with wooded acres, and also used at camp sites to keep clear paths and walkways to enjoy nature.
  • Most hand-held trimmers and brushcutters have 2-cycle engines; meaning you mix special 2-cycle oil with gasoline for the trimmer or brushcutter to run.  It is very important that you use Ethanol free gasoline in all small engines.  Using regular gasoline, even high test in these engines, can cause internal damage and a buildup of carbon if the gasoline is not quickly consumed in the tank.
  • Some trimmers and brushcutters can be held in such a way as to also cut an edge.  The trimmer or brushcutter would be rotated accordingly and the head would be vertical to the ground to create an edge around landscaping, patios, sidewalks, driveways, etc.  This crisp edge is especially beneficial as it keeps grass from growing over the edge of the pavement.  When winter comes and you are shoveling or snow blowing it’s easier to clear the snow when the pavement isn’t overgrown.
