Residential Edgers

Don’t you love seeing a nice crisp, pristine edge between a sidewalk and a lawn?  A lawn edger is the perfect way to achieve this nice clean edge!

Do-Cut Sales & Service has the perfect edger just for your yard.  Talk to a Do-Cut pro today for help selecting the right edger.  Toro, Stihl, and Ego residential edgers are in stock, at great prices at both of our stores in Warren and Canfield.

  • Residential edgers are available in electric, handheld, gasoline or battery powered, and also walk-behind gasoline powered.
  • Mow your lawn before using an edger.  Decide which areas need to be edged, and remove any rocks, debris or obstacles from that area.
  • When edging a sidewalk, position the edge of your tool right against the cement.  If you’re edging a flower bed, you may want to use a rope as a guide.
  • You will want the edger to be within about 2 inches from the edge of the lawn or flower bed you are edging around.  Be careful not to move off course or you’ll have an ugly line that your edger cut!
  • After placing the edger blade in the right spot, walk forward slowly to control the cut.  Setting the bed edger depth at 2 inches will give you a nice clean cut.
  • Bed edgers for home use cut straight edges only.  Yes, some can be angled, but the edge is straight.
  • Be sure to maintain and replace the edger blade as needed.

Electric Edgers

  • An electric edger is very lightweight and light duty.  It can clean up edges, but you have to be able to reach all of the edges with an extension cord. You also have to be careful not to cut or damage the extension cord when using an electric edger.
    Battery Powered Edgers
  • A handheld edger is sometimes called a “stick” edger.  This type of edger looks like a string trimmer, but instead of a trimmer line that is released horizontally from a trimmer head, it has a metal blade that is positioned vertically to the edger shaft.  This metal blade is usually covered by a guard, and there is a wheel that helps to stabilize the bed edger when in use.
  • A stick battery powered edger isn’t too loud and has no emissions.  You’ll need to consider how much edging you will need to do with a battery powered edger, as this type of work is heavy and can require quite a bit of battery power to get the job done.  Be sure you have sufficient batteries for your homeowner edger.

Gasoline Powered Edgers

  • A stick gasoline powered bed edger has unlimited power, and is typically two-cycle (meaning you have to mix oil and gas together – this requires special two-cycle oil).  Gas edgers can go anywhere and are not limited by power.
  • This type of edger is available in lightweight, easy-to-use models, as well as professional versions that have more powerful engines.  A gas edger is lightweight, but the operator has to maintain control and hold it at the proper angle to cut the edge correctly.

Walk-Behind Edgers

  • Walk-behind edgers are very powerful and can easily conquer big jobs.  A walk behind edger is easier to use and control than a “stick” edger, because you simply walk forward with the edger placed in the right spot.
  • Walk-behind edgers typically have three or four wheels, and you can easily control the depth and angle of this type of edger.   The metal blade on a walk-behind edger can be straight, star shaped, or circular with many edges, etc.  Be sure to maintain and replace the edger blade as needed.
  • If you use a walk-behind edger to edge landscaping and flower beds, choose an edger with a blade that can be angled.  When edging a sidewalk, turn the edger blade 90 degrees for a crisp, straight edge against the concrete.
  • Use an edger at least twice a year to maintain nice edges around sidewalks, and flower beds.  It is recommended to use an edger monthly during the spring, when there is abundant rainfall and heavy grass and weed growth.
