Everything You Need to Know About Hedge Trimmers

Hedge trimmers are used to trim and shape hedges and bushes. They will cut branches that fit between the teeth of the blade, usually up to 3/4" for residential units. Hedge trimmers quickly and easily prune perennials or cut down dry, overgrown weeds and grasses.

The first thing to consider is the power source:

Electric Hedge Trimmers (corded)

  • Electric hedge trimmers are budget friendly, and perfect for smaller yards with light trimming requirements.  An electric source needs to be nearby, and you’ll need an outdoor extension cord long enough to reach the areas you want to trim.
  • Electric hedge trimmers are simple to start and are ready to work.
  • An electric hedge trimmer is quiet enough to work whenever you need to, without disturbing your neighbors.
  • Electric trimmers do not have a fuel tank or battery pack, which makes them very lightweight and maneuverable. You’ll never have to stop your project to recharge a battery or fill your fuel tank.
  • There is very little maintenance required with an electric hedge trimmer – it is important to keep your cutting blades clean and well lubricated, and occasionally add grease to the gearbox.

Battery Hedge Trimmers

  • Today’s battery hedge trimmers are surprisingly powerful and include some of the great features found in corded electric models such as how quiet they operate.
  • Battery hedge trimmers are lightweight and very maneuverable. There’s no cord to worry about so you won’t be limited by the length of your extension cord.
  • Battery platforms are expandable. You can add batteries to extend your runtime, or even consider more tools that use the same battery system.
  • Save time and money with minimal maintenance. Keep your batteries charged, and your blades clean and well lubricated. Occasionally, add grease to the gear box.

Gas Hedge Trimmers

  • Gas hedge trimmers may weigh a bit more, but they deliver the most power and get the job done fast.
  • Gas trimmers are best suited for larger properties, or properties with a lot of hedges.
  • Gas hedge trimmers will require mixed fuel and some extra routine maintenance (spark plugs, air filter, etc.). You’ll want to keep the blades clean and well lubricated. Add grease to the gear box when needed.
  • Keep your gas hedge trimmer running at its best by using a premium oil mixture, and ethanol free fuel.

Extended Reach Hedge Trimmers

  • Extended reach hedge trimmers are best for taller shrubs and hedges. Avoid ladders while using power equipment whenever possible.
  • Battery operated and gas powered, extended reach hedge trimmers are available as dedicated units, or as attachments for Sthil Kombi, Honda VersAttach and Ego Multi-Head systems.
  • The blade angle can be adjusted for maximum reach and comfort on most extended reach hedge trimmers.

Most residential hedge trimmers utilize a double-sided blade that allows you to cut in both directions.

Single sided blades are available and are typically used for sculpting. Hedge trimmers with double sided blades are often easier for left-handed people to use and are considered safer, because you can opt to cut with the blade facing away from your body.

Every hedge trimmer has safety features such as dual switches, which requires two handed operation, and front handle hand guards to protect the operator from accidentally making contact with the blade. Some hedge trimmers stop the blade as soon as you release the trigger.

Other features:

  • When shopping for a hedge trimmer, you may want to consider its weight and blade length.
  • Hedge trimmers with long blades are not easy for every operator to maintain control. Heavier units may be awkward for some users as well.
  • Fatigue after using a hedge trimmer can be avoided by purchasing a unit with extra anti-vibration features.
  • Hedge trimmers with wrap around handles provide comfort in almost any cutting position. Many hedge trimmers even have a way to adjust or turn the handle for ease of use.
  • With gas powered hedge trimmers, translucent fuel tanks make monitoring fuel capacity seamless. With a quick glance you can be sure you won’t run out of fuel in the middle of a job. Some battery powered hedge trimmers quickly display charge levels, so you’re always informed as well.
